The Challenge
When I joined the BankBazaar SEO team, keyword strategy was largely reactive: content was created in response to competitor activity or product launches rather than driven by a systematic understanding of demand. There was no centralised keyword map โ meaning different writers would unknowingly create content targeting the same keyword, producing damaging cannibalisation. And there were entire high-value keyword clusters that BankBazaar had no content for at all, even though competitors like Paisabazaar and PolicyBazaar owned them.
The BFSI category in India is uniquely competitive. Keywords like "personal loan interest rate" carry Search Volumes of 800K+ monthly, with CPCs that rival real estate and legal โ meaning a single organic ranking can be worth crores in avoided paid spend. The stakes for getting the keyword strategy right were enormous.
Building the Framework
I designed a four-stage keyword mapping process that became the foundation for all content and on-page SEO decisions at BankBazaar for the following 18 months.
Used Ahrefs Keyword Explorer, GSC export, and Google Keyword Planner to compile a master list of 40,000+ keywords across five verticals: personal loans, home loans, credit cards, insurance, and investments. Each keyword was tagged by intent (informational / commercial / transactional), funnel stage (awareness / consideration / decision), and product type.
Ran side-by-side Ahrefs Content Gap analysis against the top 5 BFSI competitors. Identified 6,200+ keywords where at least two competitors ranked in positions 1โ10 but BankBazaar had no content or was ranking below position 20. These became the highest-priority content opportunities.
Cross-referenced existing BankBazaar pages against the keyword universe using GSC ranking data. Found 340 cases where two or more pages were competing for the same keyword โ a significant drag on ranking potential. Resolved through canonical consolidation, page merges, and targeted internal linking fixes.
For each priority keyword cluster, produced structured content briefs covering: target keyword + 8โ12 semantic variations, SERP analysis, recommended word count, required schema type, internal linking opportunities, and example competitor content to beat. 120+ briefs completed in 6 months.
Execution & Challenges
The hardest part of this project was not the analysis โ it was change management. The content team had built workflows around a different process. Introducing a structured keyword brief system meant asking writers to work differently and wait for briefs before starting articles. Some resisted; others embraced it immediately and produced demonstrably better-ranking content within their first brief-led article.
I also had to navigate the regulatory reality of BFSI content. Financial content in India is subject to RBI guidelines โ which meant certain commercial intent pages required compliance review before publication. I built the keyword priority framework with a "compliance complexity" column so the content team could plan their sprint around both SEO priority and regulatory risk.
"The keyword mapping project changed how we think about content โ from 'what should we write about' to 'which specific audience need are we meeting, and what does Google need to see to rank us?' It was a mindset shift." โ Content Lead, BankBazaar
Results
Within six months of implementing the brief-led content workflow, BankBazaar achieved 50+ new Page-1 rankings โ including several high-volume clusters that had previously been entirely owned by Paisabazaar and PolicyBazaar. The cannibalisation fixes alone are estimated to have freed up ranking potential that contributed to a 12% improvement in average position across the core loan and credit card verticals.
Key Takeaways
BFSI keyword research is a fundamentally different discipline from e-commerce or media SEO. The search intent landscape is uniquely complex: the same user querying "personal loan" might be at the very start of awareness, comparing rates, or ready to apply โ and the page that ranks for each of these sub-intents needs to be completely different. Mapping intent at the keyword level, not just the topic level, was the single most important methodological decision in this project.
The cannibalisation audit also proved far more valuable than I initially expected. In a large-scale site like BankBazaar, cannibalisation is almost inevitable without systematic monitoring โ and it silently drains ranking potential without any obvious symptom. I now run automated cannibalisation scans monthly as a standard practice.
