A few months ago, a colleague asked me a question I couldn't immediately answer: "If someone asks ChatGPT which credit card to get in India, do we show up?"

It was a simple question. But it revealed a massive blind spot in how most SEO teams were thinking about visibility. Google rankings? We had those tracked to the decimal. AI-generated answers? Nobody was watching.

That conversation pushed me to go deep on Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) โ€” and what I found completely changed how we approach content at BankBazaar.

What Is AEO โ€” and How Is It Different from SEO?

SEO is about ranking on a search results page. You optimize for a crawler, earn backlinks, structure your HTML, and hope Google puts you in position 1. The goal is a click.

AEO is different. The goal is to be the answer itself.

When someone asks Google "What is the best credit card for airport lounge access?" they might get a featured snippet โ€” a direct answer box that appears before the organic results. Or they might get an AI Overview that synthesizes multiple sources into a paragraph. On ChatGPT or Perplexity, they get a conversational response with inline citations.

In all of these cases, the user may never scroll to a traditional result. If you're not the source being cited, you don't exist.

๐Ÿ’ก
AEO in one sentence: Structuring your content so that AI systems, voice assistants, and answer engines can extract, trust, and cite your information directly โ€” without requiring the user to click through.

Why This Matters More in Fintech Than Almost Anywhere Else

Financial queries are among the most question-heavy search categories that exist. People ask:

  • "What is the minimum CIBIL score for a home loan?"
  • "How much personal loan can I get on โ‚น30,000 salary?"
  • "Which is better โ€” SBI or HDFC home loan?"
  • "What happens if I miss an EMI?"

These are perfect candidates for featured snippets, AI Overviews, and voice answers. They have a clear, factual answer. They're high-intent. And the user wants the answer fast โ€” not a 2,000-word blog post they have to wade through.

At BankBazaar, we serve millions of these queries every month. When we started tracking our featured snippet capture rate, we realized we were winning the ranking but losing the answer. Pages ranked #1 but the snippet was going to a competitor with a tighter, more direct FAQ format.

How to Actually Implement AEO: The Practical Playbook

Here is the exact process we use at BankBazaar. It's not complicated โ€” but it requires discipline and consistency.

1. Identify Question-Based Keywords

Your first task is to find every question your audience is asking. Use:

  • Google's "People Also Ask" โ€” the most underrated AEO research tool, available for free on every SERP
  • AnswerThePublic or AlsoAsked.com โ€” for visual maps of related questions
  • Google Search Console โ€” filter for queries containing "what", "how", "why", "best", "which"
  • Ahrefs or SEMrush โ€” question filter in the keyword explorer

For BankBazaar, we mapped every question-format query across our key product verticals: credit cards, personal loans, home loans, and insurance. The list was over 3,000 questions long.

2. Create Direct-Answer Content Blocks

For each key question, you need a content block that answers it in 40โ€“60 words (the sweet spot for featured snippet extraction). The format matters enormously:

  • Place the question as an H2 or H3 heading
  • Answer it in the very next paragraph โ€” directly, without preamble
  • Don't begin with "It depends" or "Great question" โ€” just answer
  • Follow with a supporting list, table, or example for context
Before (not AEO-optimized): "When it comes to the minimum CIBIL score required for a home loan, there are several factors to consider. Lenders typically look at your full credit profile, which includes your repayment history, outstanding balances, and the age of your credit accounts..."

After (AEO-optimized): "Most lenders require a minimum CIBIL score of 750 for a home loan at competitive interest rates. A score between 700โ€“749 may still qualify, but typically at higher interest rates. Scores below 700 will likely result in rejection from major banks."

3. Implement FAQ Schema Markup

Schema markup tells Google explicitly that your page contains Q&A content. This significantly increases your chance of earning the featured snippet and being cited in AI Overviews.

At BankBazaar, we built a custom FAQs Auto-Builder tool that generates this schema markup automatically from a spreadsheet of questions and answers โ€” cutting the time from 2 hours per page to under 5 minutes.

4. Optimize for E-E-A-T

Google's E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) framework matters enormously for AEO, especially in the "Your Money or Your Life" categories that financial content falls under.

Practical steps: add author bios with credentials, cite official sources (RBI, SEBI, bank websites), include "last updated" dates, link to primary sources, and make sure your domain has a solid backlink profile from authoritative financial publications.

5. Track Snippet Capture Rate

AEO results aren't measured by rankings โ€” they're measured by snippet capture. In Google Search Console, filter for queries where your average position is between 1 and 3, then check if you're winning the featured snippet for those queries using a rank tracker that supports snippet tracking.

๐Ÿ”‘
Pro tip: The fastest way to steal a featured snippet is to find a competitor who has one, analyze the exact format of their answer block, write a cleaner, more complete version in the same format, and ensure your page has stronger E-E-A-T signals. Google frequently rotates snippets as content quality shifts.

The Bottom Line

AEO is not a replacement for SEO โ€” it's an evolution of it. The fundamentals of technical quality, good content, and authoritative backlinks still matter. But the format, structure, and intent of your content needs to evolve for a world where users are increasingly getting answers before they even visit your site.

For fintech brands, the opportunity is enormous. Financial questions are high-stakes, high-intent, and perfectly suited for direct answers. The brands that get their FAQ architecture, schema markup, and E-E-A-T right will dominate AI-generated answers for years to come.

My team is in the middle of this shift right now. And the results are already showing up in our featured snippet numbers.
